Debating modified crop label

4 July 2005
Representatives from the Biotechnology Industry Association (BIA) have said that labeling would “communicate to consumers nothing relevant to health, safety, or nutrition, and indeed serve only to confuse and mislead consumers.”

The BIA considers existing ‘organic’ labels to be sufficient to allow consumers to determine that foods are GMO-free. There is an assumption hidden in this comment, that only people who buy organic food are concerned about GMOs. If GMOs are in non-organic food how will the consumer know?

Labeling is gaining support. One of the issues in the GMO food labeling battle is the argument that an allergen might be inserted into a crop product, and that consumers with specific allergies have more than a right – they have a need – to know what’s in their food.
